Additional Information

Urban music in the UK continues to gain attention, yielding artists of undeniable quality and difference. The urban scene - broadly covering hip-hop, rap and R&B - is firmly at the heart of mainstream culture in 2009, with its music and imagery impossible to ignore.

With support from Young People’s Fund 2 (Big Lottery), Generation 2012, Working Neighbourhoods Fund and Youth Music, and guidance from its young persons steering group (ROOTS), Generator has created UMT – Urban Music Training. The UMT Academy houses Generator’s music training provision for young people, aspiring producers, musicians and vocalists and is split into 3 distinct areas:

UMT will house music training related schemes for young people as well as provide first-class facilities so that emerging music producers and vocalists who will receive the highest level of professional and musical support.

UMT will be closely aligned with the industry and employment opportunities; training is delivered by producers and musicians who have built successful careers in the industry. Outside of the musical tuition, they will share vital knowledge and information about how to find and use opportunities and contacts, build profile, seek out the best collaborators and gain exposure for your music.

‘Urban Music’ is a collective term for hip hop, soul, garage and R&B and while UMT will be looking for young people, producers and performers who have interest in these styles of music, it will also look beyond these categories as collaboration and the cross-pollination of music is something Generator and UMT encourage across the board.
