  • The 40th Glastonbury Festival took place last weekend and it turned out that the good weather wasn’t the only surprise for those attending the legendary event.Damon Albarn’s visual pop project Gorillaz headlined Friday night after U2 had to pull out due to Bono’s back problems and they brought a host of guest vocalists with them, including Lou Reed, Snoop Doggy Dogg and Mark E Smith.
  • A project launched by the Music Producers Guildis aiming to ensure that each individual involved in the creation of a piece of music will have recognition through data stored in digital formats.
  • A report into consumer attitudes towards digital content suggests that music fans are coming around to the idea that piracy will result in Internet suspension.The Ipsos MORI report, entitled ‘Monetising Digital Content: Where Is The Market Today?’ reveals that 53% of those questioned agreed that it was acceptable for ISPs to slow down connections and 52% agreed that it was fair to suspend the accounts of persistent offenders.

  • Music giants EMI have officially repositioned themselves as a ‘rights management’ company, bringing their recorded and publishing divisions together.
  • NME Radio has been cancelled on digital radio and TV platforms and is now only available on the magazine’s website.The station, which was launched in 2008, came to an end when DX Media terminated their agreement with NMEowners IPC media to produce the show for DAB radio and TV.
  • The British Phonographic Industry (BPI) have issued a cease and desist order to Google, insisting that the search engine take down links to illegal music downloads.
  • Julie’s Bicycle, a campaign group directed by senior members of the music industry have published the first comprehensive report on the estimated carbon footprint of international tours.Launched on 17th June at the Royal Albert Hall, ‘Moving Arts: managing the carbon impacts of our touring’ is a three volume report documenting the ecological effects of touring and suggesting practical ways in which carbon emissions could potentially be reduced.

  • Transmission - the NEw waveLate on last year we gathered seven emerging artists together who were causing a bit of a stir and grabbing attention in the North East. We put on a showcase gig with them for an audience of all ages and a panel of industry professionals including Field Music’s Peter Brewis, NARC. Editor Claire Dupree and Tom Robinson from BBC 6 Music.
  • A coalition of eight major music publishing companies have taken legal action against file sharing website Limewire, accusing the owners of mass copyright infringement.The US based publishers, including EMI and Universal are reportedly looking at requesting settlements of up to $15,000 (over £10,000) for each song illegally shared on the Limewire service.
  • Frankie and the Heartstrings are getting together with acclaimed British author David Peace for a special live show in the North East on July 3rd. Peace, whose books include the highly acclaimed ‘Red Riding’ quartet and The Damned Utd will open for the band with a reading at a benefit show for the Easington Miners Welfare.
