  • A US federal court has issued a ‘permanent injunction’ against Limewire, essentially shutting down the peer-to-peer filesharing site. The site, founded in 2002 and with a reported monthly user base of 50 million people in 2010, was ruled to have caused copyright infringement on a massive scale in a hearing on Tuesday (26 October).

  • The Q magazine awards were held in London this week, with Florence and the Machine, Plan B, Paolo Nutini and The National amongst the big winners.Florence walked away with two awards, for best female and best track for ‘You’ve got the love’. Plan B was named as best breakthrough artist and The National scooped best album for this year’s ‘High Violet’ whilst Paulo Nutini was awarded best male.
  • Kings of Leonhave set a new record for the amount of first week digital sales with their fifth album ‘Come Around Sundown’, released this week. The album also gained the highest weekly sales of the year in the UK so far, selling 183, 000 copies to knock Robbie Williams off the top chart spot and race past the previous record for Eminem’s ‘Recovery’ LP.
  • The British Phonographic Industry (BPI) have this week announced the formation of an ‘innovation panel’ that will seek to assist the growth of both established and start up digital music businesses. The initiative will aim to provide a boost to the UK’s digital sector through sharing consumer research, helping to identify new market opportunities and providing a unified forum for dialogue with labels.

  • A new mobile app launching this month is aiming to offer distribution, marketing and social networking functions to new acts as part of an ‘instant record deal’. Pitched as “The Mini record deal your band has been waiting for”, BandApp will enable artists to upload tracks, photographs, links to merchandise and other content to the app for a subscription fee of £19.99.
  • The Musician’s Union (MU), have spoken out against cuts to arts funding announced by the Government this week.
  • UK pop artist Tinie Tempah walked away with 2 awards at this year’s Music of Black Origin (MOBO) awards in Liverpool this week.The South London rapper won the award for best newcomer and best video, fending off the likes of Professor Green and Dizzee Rascal.

  • We’re making a list, we’re checking it twice, we’re looking for support acts for Detroit Social Club’s two jam packed festive gigs at The Cluny in Newcastle.Taking over the venue for two nights of seasonal cheer, snow, reindeers and rock and roll, Detroit Social Club want four acts to help spread the Christmas spirit to a packed venue on 20 and 21 December.

  • The former boss of Warner Music in the UK has suggested that labels need to start charging fans as little as £1 for albums and look towards creating a ‘micro-economy’ for the music industry. Rob Dickens (pictured), who was speaking on a panel alongside REM manger Bertis Downs at In the City in Manchester last week said: “What we need is a revolution. What we've got is an erosion”.
  • In a move that could have an impact on the Government’s approach to the music sector, the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) have announced that 19 out of 55 ‘Quangos’ are to be abolished as part of extensive cuts.The Secretaryof State for Culture, Media and Sport Jeremy Hunt said: “These changes will allow us to continue to deliver some of the world’s best culture, media and sport, while at the same time ensuring efficiency, transparency and better value for money for the public.”
