  • US online retail giant Amazon has launched its ‘cloud based’locker service. Anticipated for several months now, the cloud drive will enable users to store music, media content and documents.
  • Some of the biggest names in pop have been added to the line-up for Radio One’s Big Weekend in Carlisle, Cumbria this year with registration for free tickets opening today (Thursday 31).

  • Adele has tightened her grip on the UK charts further, breaking all-time records with ‘21’ topping the album charts for a tenth consecutive week. In addition, Adele has two tracks in the top ten singles chart, with ‘Someone like you’ jumping back up to Number one.
  • As the IFPIreport that global recorded music sales continue to dramatically drop, Mercury Records has announced that it will no longer release singles on CD and collectible vinyl and is to rely almost exclusively on digital formats.
  • The fortunes of the HMV group have continued to decline, with reports emerging that the retailer is now seriously considering selling off book chain Waterstones and HMV Canada.The high street entertainment retail group last week issued a statement saying that it was "exploring strategic options" on these two elements of its global business amid fears that the company will soon breach covenant terms of its estimated £130m of debt with money lenders.
  • In a move that could signal the end of the MP3 era in favour of more ‘high end’ formats, download store 7Digital are starting to offer major new releases as FLAC files.This week, the site have exclusively released the new Radiohead album ‘The King of Limbs’ on 24-bit Free Lossless Audio Codec (FLAC), claiming that the download is superior to CD quality. The LP is being sold by 7digital as a package with the album in 24-bit FLAC, 16-bit FLAC and AAC 320kbps so that it can be loaded onto all digital music players.
  • The ‘Radioplayer’, which is frequently described as the radio equivalent of the BBC iPlayer service is set to launch in the UK this week.150 stations will be available initially, broadcasting a range of programmes and podcasts from BBC and commercial radio stations. Stations are required to pay a fee to be included on the service, with more stations and searchable on-demand services expected to feature soon.

  • As part of the Treasury’s ‘Plan for growth’ announced this week, the UK Government has revealed a range of measures designed to support the music industry. Published yesterday (22 March) alongside the budget announcements from baby-faced bandit and Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne (pictured), the plan outlined a finance programme that will assist Small to Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in various ways and the formation of a Council for the Creative Industries.
  • As the Digital Economy Act (DEA) faces legal challenges and a lengthy delay, rights holders are aiming to close the net on illegal file-sharing sites by putting the pressure on Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to shut them down. Despite this, the lack of unified views on the subject and the logistics of how this is going to work are proving to be major stumbling blocks.
  • Apple are reportedly suing online retailer Amazon over the rights to the name of ‘App store’.The technology giant is currently in the process of trade-marking the title and Amazon have been using ‘Appstore’ as a brand to sell software applications for Android devices.Of course, that trademark issue has hit the news before as Microsoft are trying to stop its rivals from getting ownership of the term, on the basis that ‘app store’ is a generic term.
