  • The long awaited conclusions of the Hargreaves Report have been published today (Wednesday 18 May), mapping out ten key suggestions for removing “archaic” barriers to growth for companies involved in copyright and intellectual property.
  • Generator led a storming North East invasion at The Great Escape in Brighton last weekend, with insightful industry panels and well-received live showcases from the top emerging acts in the region.
  • Prominent independent label Fierce Panda has signed a development deal with Vertigo, with label founder Simon Williams telling The Gen that he sees it as a “win-win situation”.
  • File sharing site Limewire has brought an end to its five year battle with the recording industry by making an out of court settlement of almost £65m to various labels.In a landmark settlement, Limewire and its founder Mark Gorton have reached an agreement with the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) to pay $105m (£64m) to 13 affected labels, including Warner, Universal and Sony.
  • After announcing the formation of a lobbying group specifically for the live music sector, industry umbrella group UK Music has published a report stating that live events create a significant amount of tourism in the UK and contribute almost £1bn each year to the economy.
  • Google has this month stepped up to the cloud by releasing its cloud based digital locker ‘Beta’ music service. In a similar fashion to Amazon's Cloud Player launched in March this year, no licensing deals with labels are presently in place for the service.
  • In a step away from the usual approaches to direct engagement between fans and artists, Amazing Media Group are giving artists the opportunity to sell their music and receive 100% of the revenue.
  • BPI Chairman and Generator Board Member Tony Wadsworth has published a report for MusicTank addressing the function of the record label in an ever changing and radically different digital landscape.
  • Hugely influential music blog and streaming site The Hype Machine has launched an iPhone app. The team behind the hype claim that the app will transform humble music blogs into almighty radio stations, stating: “We’ve created a seamless Hype Machine radio experience so you can tap on, kick back, and listen to a neverending stream of great music, complete with artwork and blog posts”.
