  • Those of you hoping to play a showcase at SXSW in Austin, Texas next March need to get your applications in before November 4.The event, which is the world’s biggest new music, film and technology festival will take place on March 13-18 in 2012.
  • The annual Q Awards took place in London on Monday night (24 October), with Tinie Tempah, Bon Iver and Lana Del Ray all walking away with accolades.Q magazine Editor In Chief Paul Rees, whose name is a perhaps too close for comfort to that our own Editor, said: "This year's awards were a true celebration of where music is at right now - being, as they were, reflective of how rich and varied the musical landscape is, and of how enthused music fans are to be able to discover so much that is new and exciting".

  • Merlin, the global agency representing the rights of the independent sector has struck a deal with YouTube that will enable its member labels to be paid for plays on the video steaming site.

  • One of the founders of once infamous file-sharing site The Pirate Bay has joined his fellow pirates in having his appeal against conviction turned down by the Stockholm District Court. Gottfrid Svartholm had appealed the ruling that he was guilty of “contributory copyright infringement” for his role in setting up the site.
  • Following fervent speculation over the last few days, seminal Manchester pop group The Stone Roses have announced their reunion for two huge homecoming shows followed by a world tour next year.The news, leaked last week by those in the know, was confirmed by band members Ian Brown, John Squire, Mani and Reni at a press conference at the Soho Hotel in London yesterday (October 18).
  • The Live Music Bill introduced by Lord Clement Jones has gone through a third reading in the House of Lords and will now progress to the stage of finding a sponsor. As previously reported, the Bill introduced by the Liberal Democrat peer last year plans to slash the red tape surrounding licensing for small venues.

  • After years of musicians getting knocked back by banks for funds, a new report from Think Tank Demoshas suggested that creative industry start-ups are actually less risky than businesses in other sectors.
  • Music has come out relatively unscathed in the most recent round of BBC cuts, as the corporation announces 2,000 job losses and an attempt to slash budgets by £670m a year before 2017.As expected, there will be greater sharing of news services between several channels including Radio 1 and 2, 6 Music, 1Xtra, and Radio 3 and 4.
