  • Following on from a hugely successful Music Futures Conference last week that celebrated 20 years in the music business for Generator, we’ve published our Annual Report for 2010/11 and you can read it here.
  • 6Music are celebrating the resurgence of vinyl with a new programme running throughout December that will focus on the vinyl collections of various pop stars.‘Vinyl Revival’ will see journalist Pete Paphides speak with various musicians about their love of vinyl, including Damon Albarn, Florence Welch and Ryan Adams.
  • Google has launched its much hyped music service in the US with a mix of streaming, downloads and social media elements connected to its growing ‘Google +’ service.The beta was launched in May this year and allowed users to upload tracks to the cloud and stream it and the new service expands on this significantly, synching entire music libraries across devices.
  • The debate around the value of Spotify to artists has flared up again, with independent distributor ST Holdings pulling their catalogue from the service and Mercury-nominated songwriter Jon Hopkins getting very vocal on Twitter about Spotify’s shortcomings. Hopkins claimed that he was paid under £10 for almost 1000,000 plays, tweeting: “Got paid £8 for 90,000 plays. Fuck Spotify", followed by: "Radio 1 pay about £50 for each play".
  • A new online version of The Unsigned Guide has launched this week, offering access to over 8,000 industry contacts for £4.99 a month. Although they will no longer produce the hard copy Unsigned Guide book, which has long been an industry staple alongside the music week directory, the new site looks great and the move online makes complete sense for them.

With an eye on the future, the report also gives due thanks to our partners and describes our developing national work.It recognises all support, and above all, is a great read with some interesting personal stories from some of the people and companies who have engaged with the agency.

  • The Gen takes a look at the key developments as it is confirmed that Universal Music are buying EMI’s record labels for £1.2bn, with a consortium led by Sony / ATV acquiring the publishing catalogues for £1.35bn.
  • Industry group Julie’s Bicycle have called upon UK festivals to reduce their energy use after research revealed the astonishing statistic that music festivals collectively consume enough energy to power 10,000 homes each year.
  • Feargal Sharkey has announced that he is to stand down as CEO of industry umbrella group UK Music.The former singer in The Undertones was instrumental in creating the group as a means of industry trade organisations collectively discussing key issues and lobbying the Government for change.
  • Adele, Bjork, Frank Turner and Domino Recording Co. have all triumphed at the first ever Independent Music Awards organised by AIM. Hosted by 6 Music's Steve Lamacq and Radio 1's Huw Stephens, the sold-out event took place at Soho's Floridita on Thursday 10 November and was a celebration of the successes of the sector as we approach the end of the ‘Year of the Indies’.
