  • The first reports of Record Store Day sales suggest that the event was the most successful that has ever been staged, with vinyl sales reported to be up by over 50% on last year.
  • The organisers of Liverpool Sound City have announced more panel events and a cleverly titled ‘kicking and screening’ film schedule for their event over the weekend 17th-19th May.A sync panel in association with UK Trade and Investment will focus on an ongoing hot topic within the industry, discussing the relationship of music to brands, film, TV and games.
  • Let this be a cautionary tale to all national stations considering turning the airwaves a kind of blue with pornographic noises- Ofcom has ruled that Jazz fm was in breach of broadcasting codes when it aired five minutes of what was apparently an ‘adult feature’ in February.
  • The British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors (BASCA) are promoting a concert at the end of the year to celebrate the 10th year of the British Composer Awards.Taking place on Wednesday 5 December at a London venue still to be confirmed, the ‘10 Years, 10 Composers, 10 Works’ event will feature a range of winning pieces from the last ten years of the awards.

  • Levon Helm, singer, drummer and multi instrumentalist with The Band, died last night at the age of 71. His contribution to popular music and especially the genre now known as Americana cannot be overlooked.
  • The European Commission (EC) has approved the purchase of EMI Publishing by a consortium led by Sony / ATV.The deal has been a hot topic in industry circles for some time, with Impala, AIM and PIAS all speaking out about the effect that the sale of the EMI publishing and recording catalogues will have on competition and the independent sector.
  • The Official Charts Company and Record Store Day have teamed up to create a new chart representing album sales throughout the UK’s indie record shops.The Official Record Store Chart will based purely on physical sales in stores participating in Record Store Day across the UK, including London’s Rough Trade, Stockton’s Sound It Out and Jumbo in Leeds.
  • It has been another eventful week for Spotify, as they announce growing revenues and losses alongside partnerships with more or less every transnational corporation on the planet.

  • Global music sales may still be down but PRS for Music has reported that its royalty collections rose by 3.2% to £630m last year. As previously reported the IFPI produced a report showing a 3% overall decline in music sales, a spiral that slowed significantly in 2011.
  • The artist liaison team at Evolution Festival is seeking some outstanding volunteers to work backstage at our fantastic outdoor event in the North East. Taking place over the Diamond Jubilee weekend (Sunday 3rd and Monday 4th June), the 30,000- capacity event has grown to be the biggest outdoor event in the North East and a key player on the national UK festival scene, kicking off the summer season with eclectic line-ups in a uniquely urban location.
