Bob Shennan, the former controller of Radio 5 Live, is returning to the BBC as the new controller of the UK's most popular station, Radio 2 and digital station BBC 6Music.
Shennan replaces Lesley Douglas, who resigned after Jonathan Ross and Russell Brand left offensive messages on actor Andrew Sachs' answerphone, which were subsequently broadcast on the latter's Radio 2 Saturday night show , creating an absolute media circus.
He will join the BBC this month and report to Tim Davie, the BBC's director of audio and music.
Shennan was the controller of Radio 5 Live from 2000 to 2008. He also oversaw the launch of its sister station, 5 Live Sports Extra, and had managerial responsibility for another digital service, BBC Asian Network.
He joined Channel 4 as director of radio in April last year, where he led the strategic planning for the broadcaster's ill-fated diversification into radio and developed three new station concepts: E4 Radio, 4Music Radio and Channel 4 Radio which never left the drawing board.
Prior to taking the position at Radio 5 Live, Shennan held a variety of senior roles in the BBC, including Head of Sport.
Insiders have apparently questioned Shennan's lack of music background and consider 6Music to be a significant challenge in his new role as it is widely considered to have been only a moderate success to date.
Radio 2 attempts to encompass a diverse range of programming, from rock and roll to organ music, folk, jazz and country alongside music-inspired comedy, musical theatre, music documentaries and insightful examinations of contemporary issues in daily mainstream news and current affairs shows. BBC 6Music aims for an emphasis on cutting edge contemporary music, combining new sounds with iconic popular music of the past 40 years and unlimited access to the BBC's music archive. Presenters include Steve Lamacq, Stephen Merchant, George Lamb and Elbow’s Guy Garvey.
Have your say! What do you make of this appointment? Do you regularly listen to Radio 2? What are your thoughts on 6Music?
