    Dotcom goes boom

    The following story is not for the faint hearted: It involves guns, illegal downloading, police raids and, perhaps worst of all a terrifying man who changed his surname to ‘Dotcom’. Read on for ‘Megaupload: the takedown’.Last week, the US Government moved in on Megaupload, one of the most notorious and dominant forces in file sharing. The founders now stand accused of cheating rights holders out of $500m alongside racketeering and money laundering.
  • The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) has published a new report revealing an 8% growth in digital music revenues, with subscriptions to legal streaming sites increasing by 65% in 2011.The IFPI, who are essentially the global trade body for the music industry published their ‘Digital Music Report 2012’ this week, stating that worldwide digital revenues from music hit an estimated $5.2bn, climbing year on year by an encouraging 3% from 5% growth in 2010.
  • The Wikipedia blackout seems to have worked its magic this week, not only sending students and journalists worldwide into a blind panic but also reportedly causing US officials to reconsider the controversial ‘Stop Online Piracy Act’ (SOPA).

    BRIT awards app

    The BRIT awards nominations will be announced this week, with live appearances from Ed Sheeran and Emeli Sandi alongside the launch of a new BRITS app for the iPhone.In addition to featuring news and running competitions, the app can be used by the public to cast votes in the categories of Best Single, Best Group and Best Breakthrough.
  • Beyond Oblivion, the cloud-based service financially backed by News Corp and once tipped as a major competitor to Spotify and iTunes, has folded before launching its ‘Boinc’ service.

    Last.fm has announced that a new app will help users explore more than two million tracks from emerging artists.
  • Pink Floyd are the latest legacy act to jump on the appwagon to promote their back catalogue.The ‘This day in Pink Floyd’ follows apps from other emerging talents such as Sting and Jimi Hendrix and it is actually slightly cooler than your Dad suddenly getting into Twitter.
  • Spotify founder Daniel Ek this week announced that, in a further move towards the Apple core, the streaming site are opening up to apps from third party developers.

    Google move on music

    Google has launched its much hyped music service in the US with a mix of streaming, downloads and social media elements connected to its growing ‘Google +’ service.The beta was launched in May this year and allowed users to upload tracks to the cloud and stream it and the new service expands on this significantly, synching entire music libraries across devices.
