Merlin: All I have to do is stream
New research from independent global music rights group Merlin confirms that streaming is now serious business, with 30% of independent labels across Europe generating more income from streaming than downloads last year. Merlin, which has now been in operation for five years, has published results of a member survey in which over 90% of respondents saw streaming revenues shoot up between 2011 and 2012. -

Google launch Spotify rival
As widely predicted, in-between court appearances, Google has revealed its so-called Spotify rival streaming service- the snappily titled ‘Google Play Music All Access’ (we presume All Access means Bermuda, Dublin or any off-shore tax haven). Alongside sporting a title that just trips off the tongue (and then clumsily falls down the stairs), the platform launched immediately in the US with a $9.99 per month price tag, the equivalent of less than £6, though pricing wasn’t actually confirmed for other territories at the US launch. -

AIM Awards hit repeat
As the industry awards season expands in a manner that puts music festivals to shame, entries for this year’s AIM Independent Music Awards are now open again. Submissions will be accepted from members and non-members of AIM for the third annual awards on September 3 at The Brewery in London. -

Just when you thought it safe to get back in the water, PRS for Music Foundation and Arts Council England announce the launch of Momentum Music fund – a £500,000 investment to develop the careers of talented artists and bands. -

Generator launches Mapped Out
In response to Arts Council England’s (ACE) aim to support the development of artistic talent for the UK music industry, Generator launched Mapped Out at Liverpool Sound City- a national contemporary music touring network that will link high quality emerging talent to six independent promoters across the UK, focusing on towns that have been identified as having insubstantial provision for emerging music. -

Origin of the species: Evolution interview
The 25,000 capacity two-day Evolution Festival launched in 2002 in the North East of England and has featured the likes of Tinie Tempah, Iggy and the Stooges, Plan B, Dizzee Rascal and Deadmau5. Sony: Detuned radio
The winners of the Sony Radio Academy Awards announced this week included Steve Lamacq, Danny Baker and Cerys Matthews. The Beeb dominated bash should have won an award itself for having the daftest award categories including ‘The Sony Golden Headphones award’, determined by public vote and going to Dan and Phil at Radio One. -

Amazing grace: Back on DAB
After disappearing with a burst of birdsong a year ago, emerging music station Amazing Radioreturns to DAB today (Monday 13th May). As previously reported, the station stopped broadcasting on DAB in May 2012 following a contractual dispute with transmission network owner Digital One, becoming Internet and mobile-app only.
