  • The Government has this week released £150,000 to help kick start the ‘Copyright Hub’, a proposed one-stop shop aimed at simplifying online copyright processes. The PRS, PPL and BBC have already pledged support and are amongst 12 organisations offering services to help get it off the ground.

    PRS for Musichas launched an updated Code of Conduct for the 95,000 musicians that it represents. This outlines how the membership organisation will achieve best practice by responding to the needs of members and licensees and addressing licensing in a fair and transparent way.

    MPA launch legal lines

    The Music Publishers Association (MPA) has this week launched a free legal helpline for its members.Calls to the helpline will be dealt with by members of the dedicated media department and limited to 15 minutes- long enough, it seems to address the potential minefield of copyright or licensing disputes. Reports that callers will then be automatically transferred to The Samaritans could not be confirmed at time of going to press.

    As uneasy as ABC

    The latest ABC magazine circulation figures have landed, with NME taking another plunge, Q not on the ball and a surprising upturn for some Indie publications.In a drop that seems dramatic even in a tough climate for music magazines, Bauer’s monthly title Q shed over 15,000 readers, dropping 16.7% to 64,596. Elsewhere in the Bauer stable, rock weekly Kerrang! fell by 4.5% over six months and Mojo saw a decline of 2.7%.
  • In the latest chapter of the EMI story and to the surprise of exactly no one, the publishing division of the British music giant has been sold to an investor group led by Sony in America for a reported £1.4 bn, with David Geffen and Michael Jackson improbably getting in on the deal.

    BASCA Remain Composed

    The British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors (BASCA) are promoting a concert at the end of the year to celebrate the 10th year of the British Composer Awards.Taking place on Wednesday 5 December at a London venue still to be confirmed, the ‘10 Years, 10 Composers, 10 Works’ event will feature a range of winning pieces from the last ten years of the awards.
