    BASCA Remain Composed

    The British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors (BASCA) are promoting a concert at the end of the year to celebrate the 10th year of the British Composer Awards.Taking place on Wednesday 5 December at a London venue still to be confirmed, the ‘10 Years, 10 Composers, 10 Works’ event will feature a range of winning pieces from the last ten years of the awards.
  • The European Commission (EC) has approved the purchase of EMI Publishing by a consortium led by Sony / ATV.The deal has been a hot topic in industry circles for some time, with Impala, AIM and PIAS all speaking out about the effect that the sale of the EMI publishing and recording catalogues will have on competition and the independent sector.

    PRS for Music: Game on

    Collecting Society PRS for Music has announced that it is teaming up with video game trade body TIGA at an event in London on 14 October. ‘Gaming meets music’ is aimed at gaming start-ups that use music and will explore business modelling, licensing and rights issues.

    Tom Waits for ISC

    The 2011 International Songwriting Competition (ISC), is now accepting entries, with artists such as Tom Waits, Jeff Beck and Tori Amos joining industry professionals in judging the best unknown songwriters across many categories.
  • James McMahon has been named as the new Editor of British rock weekly Kerrang! The former NME features Editor, who is currently the Deputy Editor at Gamesmaster magazine will take over the reigns of rock at the publication on 27 June.

    Bon Ivor?

    In a triumphant week for British music, Plan B, Tinie Tempah and Villagers have all stormed the Ivor Novello awards.
  • Google has this month stepped up to the cloud by releasing its cloud based digital locker ‘Beta’ music service. In a similar fashion to Amazon's Cloud Player launched in March this year, no licensing deals with labels are presently in place for the service.
  • The European Union (EU) has this week indicated that an extension to copyright is possible, with the Hungarian President accepting a vote on extending the current 50-year rule. The issue has been urgently pushed back onto Europe’s agenda due to the fact that early recordings by The Beatles such as ‘Love me Do’ are set to fall out of copyright in two years under current rules.
