    Brits abroad

    The BPI has revealed that British music accounted for almost 13% of global music sales in 2011, jumping up from less then 12% in the previous year.Prime Minister David Cameron said something about it but it’s The Gen’s policy to not quote posh boys pretending to like The Smiths and Radiohead. LOL.
  • Universal Music has announced that it is setting up a chain of ‘virtual’ vinyl stores in the window displays of ‘Pretty Green’ fashion stores across the UK. The stores within a store will be open 24 hours a day and people will be able to purchase vinyl through using an instant mobile checkout app called ‘Simply Tap’ on iPhones or Android and have it delivered to their home. Perhaps the app should be called ‘Simply Dangerous’ as it attempts to take drunken impulse purchases to new levels.
  • The first reports of Record Store Day sales suggest that the event was the most successful that has ever been staged, with vinyl sales reported to be up by over 50% on last year.

    Following the fire

    Sony DADC has announced plans to rebuild from the ashes of its distribution hub, developing a new centre on the same site as its original warehouses that were burned down during the London riots of 2011.The new buildings at the site in Enfield, North London are described as “enhanced” and will be larger than the previous structures, featuring an additional third floor and increased security measures in place to protect stock housed there.
  • Record Store Day launched properly this week, with Orbital and PiL performing at a secret gig in an intimate east London basement and a full list of releases and participating stores announced.
  • Artists and labels are gearing up for Record Store Day 2012, with exclusive releases from the likes of Arctic Monkeys and Animal Collective lined-up alongside a launch event featuring PiL and Orbital.
  • Unless you’ve been on another planet for the last year (in which case, welcome back to economic meltdown, impending apocalypse and, even worse: Ed Sheeran), it should come as no surprise to hear that sales of pop albums have overtaken rock for the first time in seven years.

    2011: A sales odyssey

    The BPI has kicked off the year by announcing that UK music sales have predictably dropped for a seventh successive year despite digital sales rising by 26%- Not that this seems to be affecting Adele, whose album ‘21’ jumped back up to number one this week.

    Sounding off 2012

    The BBC’s Sound of 2012 longlist was announced this week, already kicking up controversy for mainly featuring a predictable raft of artists already signed to major labels with Alison Wenham of AIM deeming it “completely meaningless”.
