  • Twitter launched their much anticipated music discovery app to coincide with Coachella in California at the end of last week- but only to a selective list of media ‘Influencers’. As previously reported, the micro blogging site recently snapped up new music discovery site We are Hunted, leading to widespread speculation that a bespoke streaming service would soon follow.
  • iTunes are now streaming David Bowie’s new album ‘The Next Day’ in its entirety up to the release date of March 11 in the UK. The worldwide exclusive appeared four days ago, with the album also available for pre-order. At the beginning of the year, Bowie shock-released new single ‘Where are we now’ through the platform, creating the PR storm of the year so far without a strategy and bypassing any kind of radio support or promo.
  • The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) has released a damning report commenting on Google’s efforts to demote pirate sites, stating that illegal downloads “Consistently appear at the top of Google’s search results for popular songs or artists”. Last year, Google agreed that it would make changes to its algorithm to push pirate sites down in search results and work with the music industry to tackle the problem.
  • Microsoft re-entered the digital music game this week with ‘Xbox music’, a streaming and download service featuring a catalogue of 30 million songs and a premium subscription price of £8.99 per month.

    Up the stream?

    With new figures suggesting that streaming services will grow by 40% this year, generating an estimated £696m for the global industry The Gen asks- are the tides finally turning for streaming and will artists see reasonable royalties?Research published by Strategy Analytics point towards streaming as the fastest growing facet of consuming music- hardly a surprise to anyone who has been awake at some point in the last five years but is industry opinion also changing?
  • As digital albums sales go beyond the 100m mark in the UK, Beggars boss Martin Mills has revealed that some artists on their roster see much more revenue from streaming services than radio play.
  • “The Beautiful Ones, they hurt you every time” sang Prince on the third track of his seminal soundtrack LP Purple Rain. It seems that Universal are learning that lesson the hard way this week with the news that the famously fractious pop star has exited his publishing deal with the company.Prince manager Kiran Sharma said in a statement: "We are pleased to announce that Prince and Universal have reached a mutual agreement in terminating their long standing publishing deal”.

    Daystream Nation

    The Official Charts Company (OCC) has launched the UK’s first official streaming chart, with Carly Rae Jepse floating upstream to number one ahead of the likes of Janelle Monae and Nicki Minaj.
  • Research into listening and purchasing behaviour by eMusic and the Association of independent Musichas concluded that streaming is a catalyst rather than a barrier to fans buying music.
  • Spotify founder Daniel Ek this week announced that, in a further move towards the Apple core, the streaming site are opening up to apps from third party developers.
