    Sweet Haim Alabama

    Californian three-piece Haim (pictured) have topped the BBC Sound of 2013 list. The top tip was announced this morning (4 January) after the other top five acts were revealed earlier in the week.
  • Gary Barlow has reportedly crooned into a crystal ball and closed his record label Future after three years, amid losses of £4m. Barlow, who is perhaps marginally more famous for being a member of Take That and an X Factor judge than a label boss, started Future in 2009 and signed acts such as Aggro Santos and Emma Imagination, both of whom scored top ten hits.
  • As resolutions crumble and the music industry slowly begins to peel back the curtains on 2013, the BPI has revealed that digital single sales hit a record high last year despite albums continuing a downward spiral.
  • The Justice Collective’s cover of The Hollies’ ‘He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother’ has taken the lead in the race for Christmas Number One single. The charity single, featuring the likes of Mick Jones, Sir Paul McCartney, Beverly Knight and Robbie Williams, will raise funds and awareness for the ongoing legal battle of the families of the Hillsborough disaster in 1989.

    Kennedy inspires Xfm

    In a surprise twist, Presenter and new music aficionado John Kennedy was handed the 2012 Xfm ‘Inspiration Award’ this week as he celebrated 20 years at the station.
  • Business Secretary Vince Cable has certainly had a busy week. After issuing a statement about IP protection earlier in the week, he has opened another door of the creative industries advent calendar and announced copyright reforms aimed at enabling ‘greater freedom’ in the use of content.

    Diamond Deezer?

    Deezer has announced the launch of a free version of its streaming service as it passes the 3 million mark for paying subscribers.Of course, the adage goes that nothing is actually free on the Internet and so it proves- Just like the freemium versions of Spotify et al, this version of the service will be ad-supported.
  • Singer / Songwriter Tom Odell has been named the BRITS Critics Choice for 2013, fending off Aluna George and Laura Mvula to become the first male artist to take the prize. Odell is signed to Columbia via Lily Cooper (nee Allen) imprint ‘In the Name’ of and will collect the award at the BRIT ceremony in London on February 20 next year.

    As the Geordie Gentry this week came out in condemnation of the 100% arts funding cuts proposed by Newcastle City Council, The Gen is led to believe that a second wave of proper Geordie artists with actual profile are also proposing their own solution to the council’s drastic austerity measures.
  • Trade Associations including the BPI and UK Music have welcomed new plans from Business Secretary Vince Cable for the Intellectual Property Office (IPO) to become more involved in the combat of piracy and IP education.
