    HMV: January sales?

    It seems that there will be no festive respite for HMV, with a major investment group reportedly circling above as the retail group’s losses rise to over £176m and sales drop by a further 13.5 %.
  • The Featured Artists Coalition (FAC), has pledged its support of the Fair ticketing charter proposed by the Association of Independent Festivals (AIF).
  • PRS for Music has published a festive Top 50 of the most played Christmas songs in the past two years – who do you think made it to Number One? Unsurprisingly, the list favours Shakin Stevens over Sufjan Stevens despite the songwriter releasing numerous fantastic alternative Christmas EPs over the years.

    Early Bird Evolution

    The organisers of Evolution Festival in Newcastle / Gateshead have announced dates for next year’s event, with a limited number special early bird tickets available now at last year’s price- £35 for the weekend through Ticketweb.The two-day event will take place on the Bank Holiday of Sunday 26 and Monday 27 of May next year, with the line-up announced in mid-February.
  • The BPI is now threatening the UK Pirate Party with legal action over a proxy website that is providing access to infamously banned file-sharing site The Pirate Bay.The Trade Association sent a letter to Pirate Party leader Laurence Kaye politely asking if they could please, you know, stop facilitating mass infringement of copyright from a notorious source?
  • The Musicians' Union has this week published new research revealing “chronic levels of low pay” amongst professional musicians. Although the term ‘struggling musician’ is a frequently employed cliché, some of the stats are pretty shocking- more than half of professional musicians are paid less than £20,000 per year and 60% have worked for free during the past year.

    BBC Sound Out 2013

    It's that time of year again- you can forget about goodwill to all emerging artists and prepare to scream, shout, argue, agree, have a good moan at the state of pop or simply recline into indifference- The BBC’s Sound of 2013 longlist has been revealed.The list is compiled from votes for three favourite new acts from a total of 213 tastemakers including journalists, DJs and bloggers, with the winner announced in early January next year.
  • As part of an autumn budget statement that resembled plunging the nation into a pool of ice cold water after the warm summer glow of the Olympic effect, there seemed to at least be some good news for the Creative Industries- Chancellor George Osborne this week announced a new £6 million investment fund for the sector to provide training, in addition to 25% tax breaks.
  • As Apple launches a simplified iTunes 11, Spotify founder Daniel Ek has claimed that his service has paid over £310m ($500m) in royalties to rights holders since launching in 2008. Ek also revealed that Spotify now has more than five million paying customers globally, with over 20 million active users.

    MAMA knows best?

    As widely predicted, HMV have sold live music and management company MAMA Group to a consortium led by the group’s current CEO Dean James. The £7.3m deal, backed by Lloyds Development Capital, marks the end of what many would consider to be a failed experiment in the live industry by struggling retailer HMV.
