iPad set for UK Launch this month

The highly anticipated Apple iPad device is finally set for a UK launch on May 28th.

The iPad was devised to occupy the middle ground between laptops and smart phones. It essentially has similar design features and functionality to the iPhone and iPod touch but is the size of a tablet computer, with an emphasis on users browsing the Internet, consuming music, media and games alongside creating their own content.

UK prices are set to vary from £429 for the most basic version up to £699 for the top of the range device, featuring ‘3G’ Internet connectivity and a 64G storage capacity. Apple have already sold over one million iPads in the US, with similar levels of demand expected globally.

The touch-screen device has created some controversy since it was announced by Apple CEO Steve Jobs (pictured) at the end of January this year, with critics accusing Apple of creating the digital equivalent of a gated community. This refers to the fact that the device can only run software approved by Apple and they have the right to remotely delete any content and media from an iPad as a security measure.

Have your say: Will you be using the iPad to consume music on the move? Or is it a more media orientated device? It isn’t exactly as handy as existing platforms and mp3 players for your morning commute, is it? What do you think of the price? Where do you stand on the digital rights issues?
