Julie’s Bicycle, a campaign group directed by senior members of the music industry have published the first comprehensive report on the estimated carbon footprint of international tours.
Launched on 17th June at the Royal Albert Hall, ‘Moving Arts: managing the carbon impacts of our touring’ is a three volume report documenting the ecological effects of touring and suggesting practical ways in which carbon emissions could potentially be reduced.
Alison Tickell, Director of Julie’s Bicycle, which launched in 2007 said in a statement: “By understanding the science and deploying our creativity in the manner in which we consider best we are much more likely to shape our future in a manner befitting our business."
The report estimates that 85,000 tonnes of CO2e (carbon dioxide equivalent) emissions were produced by live shows in 2009, including bands, orchestras and theatre. It goes on to outline a range of recommendations aimed at the live industry at all levels, including promoters, suppliers and venues and the organisation have also launched an online tool that will enable festivals, tours and venues to calculate their carbon impact effectively.
