Legendary DJ and champion of the underground Steve Lamacq (pictured above) hosted his final show for BBC Radio 1 on Monday 24th August, following 16 years with the station.
Closing his show with the track ‘Keep The Faith’ by political punk group The Neurotics, Lamacq thanked his fans. He had commented on his time at Radio 1 in an earlier statement and said: “It was a wonderful opportunity to try and subvert pop music radio from within, which I hope we managed to do more often than not.”
Lamacq’s Monday night programme, In New Music We Trust aired from 9pm-10pm and showcased the best new emerging Indie and alternative music. It will be replaced in the short term by a new series of music documentaries exploring artists, eras and genres- Story of the Noughties is a ten-part series looking back at the decade as it draws to a close.
The decision to drop Lamacq comes as part of a dramatic reshuffle across the board at BBC Radio, in which Jo Whiley lost her prime mid-morning slot to Fearne Cotton and Tim Westwood was appointed to host the weekday drivetime show on the BBC’s digital radio station 1Xtra.
Elsewhere, Tuesdays 9pm-10pm will see Nihal hosting a “four-way battle of wits and fury” as a journalist, musician and a DJ discuss the biggest records, films and games released that week. On Wednesdays at the same time, Huw Stephens will go on what is termed as a ‘weekly audio adventure’ to find interesting and experimental sounds and in New DJs We Trust will become a permanent slot in the 9pm-10pm slot on Thursdays, with Jaymo & Andy George, Heidi, Alex Metric and Toddla T.
It was also announced this week that legendary broadcaster Sir Terry Wogan will be replaced at the end of this year by Chris Evans in Radio Two’s breakfast slot at 7.30-9.30 am.
Lamacq began his Radio 1 career hosting The Evening Session with Jo Whiley, who later moved to a daytime slot.
The broadcaster will remain on BBC Radio 2 and 6 Music, where he will no doubt continue to champion new alternative music. His 6 Music slot runs weekdays 4pm to 7pm, plus a one-hour show from 11pm every Wednesday on Radio 2.
