The organisers of Love Parade have announced that the event has no future following the tragic deaths of 21 audience members at the huge dance event held in Germany on 24th July.
Overcrowding onsite at the festival in Duisberg, West Germany resulted in a stampede in which 21 people died and over 500 others were injured.
Although an official criminal investigation as to the cause of the catastrophe is underway, it has been reported that there was only one entrance to the site and that it involved extremely large crowds passing through an enclosed tunnel.
The free event has an estimated attendance of 1.4m and was originally established in 1989 and held in Berlin, although since 2007 it had moved around to different German cities, with the brand also expanding to international events across different cities in Europe and North America.
Speaking at a press conference last week, Love Parade founder Rainer Schaller told reporters: "Out of respect for the victims, their families and friends, we are going to discontinue the event in the future, and that means the end of the Love Parade".
Hundreds of mourners attended a memorial service held in Duisberg last weekend and all of the flags in Germany flew at half-mast.
The results of the ongoing investigation could have significant impact on live promoters in all territories and could lead to new EC legislation.
