MDA level the playing field

Posted in News by Generator on Wednesday 11th of August 2010

Generator CEO Jim Mawdsley (pictured) has written the first of several campaign papers published by the Music Development Association (MDA). This series of documents aims to address important issues and future strategies relating to the growth and sustainability of the Music Industry in the UK.

The white paper, entitled ‘Levelling the playing field’ discusses the way forward for Music Development in the UK, making the case for improved support and training offered by the Government to the music sector on both a national and regional scale, referencing Generator as a successful model.

Within the paper, Mawdsley presents an impassioned argument that the music industry doesn’t receive a comparable level of support and subsidy from the Government when considered alongside other creative industries such as film and video games. The report states: “Whilst the Government grasps the collective value of the Creative Industries to the Economy, it does seem confused as to how to develop and grow this vibrant sector. Indeed, while film, television, games and digital media are well supported, the music sector is definitely the poor second cousin”.

Future topics to be addressed by MDA papers include International events and conventions, bulk Visa arrangements and finance for trade ventures and local / independent Radio support.
