The month of Myspace

Posted in Digital, News by Generator on Thursday 16th of February 2012

Just when you thought it was out..Myspace pulls you back in. In some kind of cyber Cinderella story, the original music social networking site is back in the game with more than 1 million new users in the last 30 days.

The site famously sold-off by Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp at a huge loss eight months ago is now up to a total of 25 million registered users.

The website claimed that an estimated 40,000 people a day had signed up to Myspace since it introduced new links to dominant rivals Twitter and Facebook.

Chief Executive Tim Vanderhook said: "The numbers tell an amazing story of strong momentum and dramatic change for Myspace and the 1 million-plus new user accounts we've seen in the last 30 days validates our approach."

Vanderhook claimed that Myspace now offered the biggest free music collection online, ahead of Spotify and boasting a catalogue of more than 42m tracks. "Myspace is building meaningful social entertainment experience around content, where consumers can share and discover the music they love"

As previously reported, Myspace was sold by Murdoch's News Corp in June 2011 for $35m after they paid $580m for it in 2005. New owners Specific Media said that News Corp had “lost sight” of the purpose of the site and that they would refocus Myspace around music services, getting their message out through celebrity investor Justin Timberlake.

Don’t count it out as we could be looking at the comeback kid!
