Music video appeal ruling

The UK collecting society responsible for licensing the broadcast and public performances of music videos have won an appeal at the High Court against a copyright tribunal that ruled a dramatically reduced royalty rate for a TV operator.

Video Performance Limited (VPL) challenged the initial ruling made in July this year that would have enabled CSC Media Group to pay almost half of what VPL were requesting. This company had proposed that they should only pay a royalty rate of 8% as opposed to the 20% that VPL were requesting and the original tribunal had set the rate at 12.5%

Phonographic Performance Limited (PPL) and VPL chairman and CEO Fran Nevrkla said: "We are determined to stand up for the rights of our members and for the value of the repertoire we represent”.
