The Music Managers Forum (MMF) and Featured Artists Coalition (FAC), have named Zane Lowe as ‘Industry champion’. The trade associations will present an award to the Radio One DJ at the upcoming Artist and Manager Awards in London on 27 November.
The first Industry champion award was handed to Martin Mills of Beggars last year, who recently hit the headlines with XL’s millions.
The MMF’s Jon Webster said: “Martin Mills is a hard act to follow but Zane’s unswerving commitment to new artists has helped so many over the years. We are proud to recognize that selfless achievement”.
Lowe is one of the most famous DJs in the UK, known for his boundless and seemingly undiscerning enthusiasm for new music. He presented shows such as ‘Brand:new’ in the nineties on MTV and is seen to have been instrumental in launching the careers of artists such as Arctic Monkeys, Tinie Tempah and Jake Bugg, whose self-titled debut album went straight in at number one this week. Lowe’s ‘hottest records’ on Radio One remain hugely influential and he has recently championed the likes of Frank Ocean and Haim.
All in all, it's an appropriate award, although we did enjoy this footage of Lowe uncharacteristically zoning out in the face of Lauren Laverne’s incredibly obsequious babbling about Beyonce at Glastonbury a couple of years ago.
