Pop music icon Prince has bizarrely declared the Internet to be ‘over’, stating that he will refuse to release his music on digital formats in the future.
The pint-sized star is releasing his new album ‘20Ten’ exclusively on CD format, as a cover-mount gift on The Daily Mirror newspaper this weekend.
Prince has previously taken a stance against online mediums by threatening to sue sites such as Youtube for misuse of his music and has now shut down the official Prince website.
He told The Daily Mirror: “The Internet is completely over. I don’t see why I should give my new music to iTunes or anyone else. They won’t pay me an advance for it and then they get angry when they can’t get it.”
In 2007, Prince released his album ‘Planet Earth’ as a cover-mount on the Mail on Sunday newspaper in a then unprecedented deal, playing a sold-out residency of 21 shows at London’s O2 arena in the same year.
Debate: Prince will receive a substantial cash advance for his music from the newspaper, but does the perception of covermounts being "free with...", damage the credibility of others trying to sell their music? Although Prince still has a strong Live appeal, what was the last track you bought by him?
