Radio Roundup: Moyles Rants, Global rebrands

Posted in News, Radio by Generator on Thursday 23rd of September 2010

BBC Radio One breakfast DJ Chris Moyles launched an astonishing tirade against his employers over pay live on air yesterday. Moyles said: "I'm very, very angry for being put into this position. I haven't been paid since the end of July and no-one cares about it."

Continuing his rant against the BBC, he added: "What is it worth for me to carry on 'til, let's say, seven? A tenner? Can you imagine if Terry Wogan had not been paid for two months, do you think that would ever happen? It just wouldn't, would it?”. The high profile radio personality signed a new contract with the station in July and is Radio One's longest-serving breakfast presenter, having occupied the slot since early 2004.

In other radio news, Global radio announced this month that they are dropping the ‘Galaxy’ Brand from their stations during 2011. The operators plan to rebrand the stations, including those in Newcastle, Manchester, Scotland and Birmingham as ‘Capital FM’.

CEO of Global Group Ashley Taylor said: "Capital will be the first proper national commercial competitor that Radio 1 has ever experienced. The Capital brand has a resonance not just in London but around the UK and internationally."

Under the new structure, each station will have its own breakfast and ‘drivetime’ shows alongside local news bulletins but all other programming will be syndicated across the network.
