Generator has teamed up with screen agency Northern Film and Media to launch an £8K commission for a filmmaker to put together a new video for XL Recordings artist SBTRKT.
As part of the Transmission project, five shortlisted filmmakers will produce a DIY video for SBTRKT’s ‘Trails of the past’ track, going forward to be interviewed by a panel including both agencies and a representative from the label, with the winner awarded a production budget of £8K to make the final product.
Generator's Director of Resources Jo Thornton said: “It’s clear that this is an incredible opportunity for UK filmmakers and Generator is extremely pleased to be working with Northern Film & Media alongside XL Recordings and SBTRKT”.
Thornton continued: “‘Trials of the past’ demands an imaginative visual response and with the award made from the ‘The Space’ project, there are sufficient resources to ensure that a great music video will be produced”.
Transmission is a key component of Generator and NFM’s Space Invasion project – a series of events and activities that involve unique creative collaborations across a range of conventional and unusual venues in the North East.
Space Invasion is one of the UK’s most ambitious ‘Space’ projects funded by Arts Council England (ACE) and the BBC, with 53 projects commissioned nationwide to realise and showcase the UK’s most exciting digital arts initiatives across connected devices.
The commissioned video will be premiered at a final event on Saturday 22 September at The Sage Gateshead and will be made available on www.theSpace.org and other distribution channels. The filmmaker will also be the third person to ever make a video for SBTRKT, an artist who spans genres from electronic to two-step and dubstep and places a great emphasis on mystique, even wearing native ceremonial masks for live appearances
SBTRKT is also a prolific re-mixer, tackling tracks from M.I.A, Radiohead, Modeselektor, Basement Jaxx, Mark Ronson, Underworld and Goldie.
The application deadline is 12.00 Friday 6 July and you can download the application form and timeline below.
