It's that time of year again, when everyone from the BBC to a myriad of different music magazines and blogs are setting out to predict the future. Amidst the fierce weather and already broken New Year resolutions, we offer our unique twist on this educated guessing game- ‘Super 8’.
Each year, The Gen publishes a list of artists to look out- Its basically who we think will be artistically exciting and commercially successful throughout the year, with 8 from the North East and 8 from everywhere else.
Of course, we don’t want to state the obvious- we’re all confident that this will be a defining year in North East music, from imminent debuts from bright young upstarts Frankie and the Heartstrings and cosmic soul warriors Detroit Social Club to returning heroes such as Field Music and The Futureheads alongside new pop eccentrics The Chapman Family and Beth Jeans Houghton. That’s an awful lot of varied musical talent about to come into fruition.
You won’t find any of those names on the list as they are already out there and well on their way to taking on the world. Besides, at the risk of showing off, we’ve already tipped them all in previous years.
Basically, it isn’t about recycling endless ‘Ones to watch’ lists and no-brainers, it's about retaining an element of surprise and subjective insight.
So, here we are, in no particular order:
