  • The BPI has revealed that British music accounted for almost 13% of global music sales in 2011, jumping up from less then 12% in the previous year.Prime Minister David Cameron said something about it but it’s The Gen’s policy to not quote posh boys pretending to like The Smiths and Radiohead. LOL.
  • Just two years after escaping closure and weeks after celebrating its tenth Birthday, BBC 6 Music has been named ‘UK Station of the Year’ at the 30th annual Sony Radio Academy Awards held in London this week.
  • The Official Charts Company (OCC) has launched the UK’s first official streaming chart, with Carly Rae Jepse floating upstream to number one ahead of the likes of Janelle Monae and Nicki Minaj.

  • Those of you getting twitchy about the fact that it has been at least five minutes since the last news story about Adele’s remarkable sales success can rest easy- second album ‘21’ outsold Michael Jackson’s Thriller this month, becoming the fifth biggest selling LP of all-time in the UK.
  • Tributes are pouring in from across the music world following the death of Adam Yauch of The Beastie Boys, who passed away aged 47 last Friday following a battle with cancer.
  • Universal Music has announced that it is setting up a chain of ‘virtual’ vinyl stores in the window displays of ‘Pretty Green’ fashion stores across the UK. The stores within a store will be open 24 hours a day and people will be able to purchase vinyl through using an instant mobile checkout app called ‘Simply Tap’ on iPhones or Android and have it delivered to their home. Perhaps the app should be called ‘Simply Dangerous’ as it attempts to take drunken impulse purchases to new levels.
  • John Peel’s record collection is now available online, with the John Peel Centre for Creative Arts starting to upload tracks last week as part of an ongoing digital archive selected from the 26,000 LPs in the DJ’s vinyl collection.

  • The British Phonographic Industry (BPI), has turned the heat up on the UK Government to confront the ongoing effects of music piracy and “stop these endless reviews of copyright”.
  • The Great Escape has revealed full details of its convention programme in advance of the three-day series of live shows, conferences and workshops in Brighton next week (10-12 May).Placebo’s Brian Molko will feature on an ‘In Conversation’ panel presented by PRS for Music on 10 May, with 6Music’s Matt Everitt.
