New quarterly figures from Radio Joint Audience Research (Rajar) have revealed record-breaking numbers of people listening to radio in the UK, with up to 92% of adults turning on and tuning in.
We all like radio related statistics don’t we? Good- now lets take a deep breath and dive in!
Up to 47.6m adults listened to the radio in the second quarter of this year, up by 845,000 during the same period last year. 22m of these were listening via digitally enabled receivers such as DAB, online and Internet enabled TVs on a weekly basis, representing a 10.7 % increase year on year.
The share of radio listening through digital platform accounts for more than one quarter of all radio listening for the first six months of this year, with access to DAB up by 11% year on year to 20.2m adults.
The figures also showed that Radio 4 has reached its highest-ever listening figures, with 10.85 million people tuning in each week.
Tim Davie, Director BBC Audio & Music, said: "Radio 4 and Radio 4 Extra play a unique role in the country's cultural and news agenda, so I am delighted to see listeners tuning into them in record numbers. Radio goes from strength to strength as a result of the industry's co-ordinated efforts and we are now seeing impressive performances and growth across the sector”.
Radio listening via mobile phone has also increased by 16.1% year on year with 14.5% of adults aged 15+ in the timeframe.
So, what does it all mean? The figures certainly show that, like all kinds of media, people are becoming used to listening to radio through a variety of digital devices, with mobile access on the rise. Also- despite the offerings of Spotify et al, we still like discovering music in a prescriptive kind of way and trust radio presenters as gatekeepers, enjoying the unpredictability of the medium. Unless of course, you’re listening to daytime Radio One, in which case drop the dial!
