Feargal Sharkey, CEO of UK Music, outlined the future of the UK music industry in the ‘Liberating Creativity’ document including ambitious targets such as toppling the US as the number one music-producing country in the world.
At a recent Generator event also attended by BPI Chairman Tony Wadsworth and representatives from the Musicians Union and AIM, Feargal underlined the importance of music business and musician support in achieving these goals and the role regional music development agencies can play in this.
Feargal said: “One of the major advantages the music industry has is the enormous amount of passion that fuels it, but passion alone is not enough to sustain this sector. For success this passion has to be coupled with skill which must be nurtured and grown.
“We must establish a framework of skills support for musicians and music businesses to turn passion and talent into success and to drive the industry forwards. Music development agencies such as Generator are key to this, sharing their knowledge and experience and nurturing talent at grassroots level.
“Generator are a beacon in the UKs music development sector and I’d like to see an organisation like Generator in every region of the UK.”
The event also saw Generator officially launch their £1.64m Building the Business of Music programme which will help 240 small and medium sized companies and create up to 100 new jobs.
Generator announced plans for the next three years of activity, growing the organisation to deliver the full remit of a music development agency, serving musicians and the industry, including:
- Building the Business of Music
- Improving the commercial viability of artists (including UMT programmes and SPEAR)
- Delivering music business to music business training (MB2MB)
- Levelling the playing field – ensuring even delivery of support across the UK
