Newcastle based space rockers White Belt Yellow Tag released their debut album ‘Methods’ this week on Distiller Records. The Gen caught up with singer Craig Pilbin at the end of a three-week UK tour supporting The Automatic.
When asked how he felt about the LP release, Pilbin said: “Its incredible, I’ve been waiting for this for a very long time and we want everyone to hear it”.
“We recorded the album at a studio in Doncaster called ‘Wavelength’ but initially demoed the songs at Polestar in Newcastle. We recorded it ourselves and Chris Potter (The Verve, The Rolling Stones) mixed it”.
When asked about the creative process of writing songs within the band he elaborated: “It’s a bit different to most bands. We mess about with loops and ideas and then construct them into songs. We aren’t all stood around in a practice room waiting for the bass player to play a slap funk solo!”
White Belt Yellow Tag were formed in 2008 by Pilbin and Justin Lockey, formerly of Newcastle noiseniks yourcodenameis:milo. They featured in The Gen’s Super 8 top tips of 2009 and recently released the ‘Always and Echoes’ EP, gaining a lot of airplay from Jo Whiley and Zane Lowe on Radio One.
The band are confirmed to play live at The Great Escape festival in Brighton and the ‘Live at Leeds’ event alongside a North East show at The Empire in Middlebrough with The Sunshine Underground.
Pilbin said: “We’ll hopefully play shows across the rest of Europe in May and then America later in the year and a headline UK tour after the festivals in September”.
