Creative agencies Generator and Northern Film & Media joined forces for Space Invasion - one of the UK’s largest projects for The Space – the experimental £2.5 million digital arts initiative developed by Arts Council England in partnership with the BBC.
Space Invasion enabled collaboration between musicians, artists, poets and filmmakers and took over unique venues across the North East. Watch all the videos on The Space now.
All works were uploaded to thespace.org and the project culminated in a special event 'Space Invasion at The Sage Gateshead' on September 22nd, featuring performances from special guests Ghostpoet, Raj Pannu (Coldcut/Ninjatune), Jethro Fox, Seye and Lulu James, plus special screenings of works featuring SBTRKT, Lanterns on the Lake, Novak Collective and Paul Smith (Maximo Park).
'Pallion' feat. Lanterns on the Lake & Novak Collective
The initiative produced the stunning piece ‘Pallion’ featuring Lanterns on the Lake who are signed to legendary independent label Bella Union. The band and visual artists Novak Collective were commissioned and placed together by Generator and Northern Film and Media to create an audio and visual response to the Pallion Shipyard, Sunderland and to TSS Manxman (1955-2012). ‘Pallion’ tells the story of the historic vessel and once thriving shipbuilding yard. ‘Pallion’ and a 'making of' video are available at thespace.org now.

Artists were selected from Generator's The Tipping Point blog which relies on Tips from tastemakers to unearth the UK's best emerging artists. Jethro Fox, Lulu James and Seye filmed live sessions at Blank Studios, Newcastle, including covers of their favourite Old Grey Whistle Test performances. The Tipping Point artists also performed at 'Space Invasion at The Sage Gateshead' - a public event at The Sage Gateshead on 22 September which shows all of the work produced through Space Invasion and feature live performances. Culture fans could also watch the project evolve, gain exclusive mobile/tablet interactive content through Screach and view other projects from across the country through The Space platform.
