Friday 13th May - Great Escape DIY panel in association with Music Development Association
Victoria Courtroom, 12.15pm
With new bands now being told to adopt a DIY approach to launching their careers, can they really do it on their own or do they need a team around them? What advice and skills do aspiring artists need to develop or access?
And what should government, the industry and the music development agencies be doing to help artists gain these skills in order that those with the real talent become industry ready?
Guests:
Based in Newcastle upon Tyne, Generator is recognised as the leading Music Development Agency in the UK, providing support, advice and guidance to musicians and music businesses in the North East of England. As CEO of Generator, Jim Mawdsley oversees the agency’s work to build and strengthen regional music businesses and identify career paths for, and develop the commercial viability of artists. Jim also chairs the Music Development Association (see below).
Columbia Records is one of the most widely-recognised label brands, releasing giants such as Dylan, Springsteen and AC/DC. In recent years the label has enjoyed considerable success with the likes of Mark Ronson, Kasabian and Kings of Leon and recent signings Katie B and The Vaccines demonstrate the label’s ability to spot success stories early. A&R Ollie Hodge signed Glasvegas and The Vaccines and A&Rs Lissie. He will be explaining to us how major labels develop artists.
Ritu Morton has been working as a music publicist since 1996 and her company Six07 Press is now in it's 11th year. In the intervening time Ritu and her team have worked a diverse but incredibly talented roster from Razorlight to Kate Nash and more recently overseen album campaigns for The Airborne Toxic Event and Stornoway. The common denominator between these acts is they have all achieved huge success with Ritu at the helm and in the case of TATE and Stornoway scored top 20 albums without record deals or any traditional label support.

Featuring...

(3.15pm)
Lanterns on the Lake give us a sparking dose of cinematic indie. With their starry songs and lustrous melody, this band are quietly creating something truly magical and inspiring. The band have been championed by the likes of Steve Lamacq, Huw Stephens and Lauren Laverne and recently signed to the prestigious Bella Union record label releasing their debut album in 2011.
“Some of the loveliest, swooping celestial lushness we've heard in quite some time” Drowned In Sound

(2.30)
Let's Buy Happiness mix of delayed guitars and clipped Nordic-sounding vocals make them one of the most exciting UK bands of 2011. Having already played Glastonbury Festival (John Peel Stage), the band are firm favourites at Drowned in Sound and BBC 6Music and have received much praise from the likes of NME, Q Magazine, The Fly and NYLON.

(1.45pm)
Mammal Club take pop melodies and dramatise them, crafting interlocked mazes of noise that work on many levels. Dizzying and masterful, their fearlessly experimental sound has been labeled avant-pop. 2010 saw the band supporting Everything Everything, play an acclaimed show at In the City and receive praise from BBC 6Music's Tom Robinson and Drowned in Sound. This year sees the band step out of the shadows with the release of their debut EP on Everybody's Stalking Records.

(1.00pm)
Polarsets play latin infused indie trance. It will make you feel better. The three piece from Whitley Bay have played alongside Delphic, Fenech Soler, Ellie Goulding and others. Their show is very high octane. Most of their gear is white. They aim to spread euphoria. Polarsets next release is through French label Kitsuné Records.
