DEAD CITIES

Song Title:
HOURS

Words by Paul Brown

Liverpool’s Dead Cities sum up themselves about as well as anybody could really. According to their Bandcamp bio, they’re ‘For all your introspective pop needs’. Based on 'Hours', taken from their debut album 'This Killer Wave', they’re absolutely bang on.

The song’s a classic case of hidden depths, hinging on a deceptively simple arrangement, but there’s a beautifully understated emotion running through it which makes it much, much more than the sum of its parts. A large part of the appeal is in the vocal delivery, which calls to mind the long-last halcyon days of The Electric Soft Parade. It’s also much more instant than it appears on the surface, two listens and it’s pretty much embedded happily in your mind. Dead Cities are a hell of a prospect, and 'Hours' proves the age-old truism that good pop music is all about keeping it simple.
