Glasgow’s always been a fertile seam for bands, to the point that it must be pretty difficult for musicians up there to get noticed. French Wives don’t seem to be having too many problems in that area, though, based on recent press. It’s pretty understandable why, because even the most cursory of listens reveal recent single ‘Numbers’ to be gorgeously slick chamber pop, presumably pleasing to anyone’s ear.
Listen a little closer though, and there’s an urgency to ‘Numbers’ too, a driving drum beat and agitated lyrics about wounded legs and broken crutches offsetting the orchestral glow. The combination of the two facets is crucial, giving them a similar edge to recent Tipping Point electees The Union Choir. French Wives were recently named in the Top 5 of the Blogging Sound of 2012 (the alternative to the now infamous BBC list), and the band are set to release their debut album in the next few months. They’re definitely one worth keeping an eye on.
