THE HYSTERICAL INJURY

Song Title:
MATHS

Written by Toby Rogers

I’ve had some hysterical injuries in my time. Aged three I got my finger caught in the seat in a swimming baths changing room; at seven I sliced the side of my head open reaching for a chocolate biscuit in the kitchen; at 15, I was hit so hard in the head during a hockey game that you could see my skull. But enough of my frequent trips to casualty, The Hysterical Injury worth talking about this week is an explosive boy-girl combo from Bath-via-Wales.

An incandescent bass-and-guitar two-piece, The Hysterical Injury fuse Riot Grrrl’s finest moments with the stripped-back honesty of just rhythm section and vocals. Fronted by Annie Gardiner, who plays bass and sings, they’re more The Vaselines than The White Stripes. Brother Tom hits the drums. Hard. An explosive broadside of unrelenting indie-rock, recent track ‘Maths’ is a fine example of the duo’s talents.

Having spent four years working towards an album, and worked their way through more band members than Spinal Tap, The Hysterical Injury got the break they needed thanks to The Joe Strummer Foundation, which gave them the opportunity to produce their debut on their own terms. An almost-live album with virtually no overdubs, Dead Wolf Situation is a raw and compelling blast of bare bones rock ‘n’ roll. The numbers add up, The Hysterical Injury have it all.
