The first release from Pure Casual, a new independent North East record label, comes in the form of ‘Mikolah’ from Wilmslow based singer-songwriter Jon Covell aka Premise Beach. The debut single from Covell is the first of a four part ‘Welcome to…Premise Beach’ series which will see a two-track single released every two months from February onwards. If 'Mikolah' and its partner ‘Step Inside’ are a taste of what’s to come, then Premise Beach is a very exciting prospect indeed.
Covell suffers from acute hearing sensitivity, therefore has never performed his music publicly, yet one can’t help but think this sensitivity only helps rather than hinders Premise Beach’s tunes: 'Mikolah' has a blissfully soothing quality and a gently infectious melody. Although the concept of an ‘unsent love letter’ sounds a little cringe-worthy on paper, 'Mikolah' is in fact beautifully understated in the way it delivers its delicate romance with Covell softly crooning each line. Partner track ‘Step Inside’ has the same swooning, lethargic-yet-lovely quality with synth notes playfully interjecting with each guitar strum to create a lullaby-esque tune.
