ZILLION

Song Title:
MAKE ME HAPPY

Words by Linsey Teggert

With mainstream chart botherers such as Britney Spears declaring they have ‘gone dubstep’ and pretty much every song in the Top 20 featuring a whomping bass wobble, it seems that the genre has been somewhat bastardised of late. It’s therefore refreshing to hear Norwich music producer and DJ Zillion’s own unique interpretation of the dubstep genre which relies on subtlety and haunting atmospherics rather than all-out basslines. Clearly influenced by soul as much as UK garage vibes, Zillion’s tracks are ethereal and brooding, mixing delicate beats with dark, spacious bass to create melancholic soundscapes.

'Make Me Happy' is not so much a club track, but a slice of experimental dubstep more suited for low-lit, late night after the club listening. A lush track with eerie, minimal beats and a moody looped vocal sample which intertwines perfectly with the bass to give a deep, cinematic feeling. It’s easy to get lost in the intricate textures of Zillion’s music, which unlike most dubstep provides real emotion rather than just a huge bassline, evidence that this young producer is a talent to keep your eye on.
