Mick Ross recognised as MPG Unsung Hero

Last night, Music Producers Guild honoured Generator CEO Mick Ross with its Unsung Hero Award - a recognition reserved for those who work tirelessly behind the scenes to shape and support the music industry.

From my perspective as Chair, this couldn’t be more deserved.

For over two decades, Mick has lived every part of this industry - as an artist, a producer, and now as a leader - but what defines him is his relentless commitment to creating opportunity for others. Not in theory, but in practice. He has built a career on opening doors, challenging systems, and making sure talent doesn’t have to leave the North to succeed.

Under his leadership, Generator has transformed into a nationally significant force - delivering major label partnerships with Warner Music and EMI North, securing and shaping a multi-authority backed Northern Music Export Office, and building international bridges as far as Japan. Closer to home, that work has translated into real infrastructure and real impact - from the development of a new studio on Newcastle’s Quayside, to pioneering skills programmes, paid internships at Real Living Wage, and initiatives like Sonic Futures and the Black Music Incubator.

He has also played a central role in shaping the wider ecosystem - successfully lobbying for a small venues fund, supporting the return of the Mercury Prize to Newcastle, and helping drive a remarkable growth in music tourism across the North East. In just a few years, that has contributed to the region’s music economy doubling in value and supporting thousands of artists, professionals and businesses to build sustainable careers.

But what makes Mick truly deserving of this award goes beyond the achievements.

He is, at his core, a people-first leader - leading with trust, honesty and a deep understanding of the communities he comes from and continues to serve. Whether it’s mentoring his team or championing emerging artists, Mick creates space for others to step up - often seeing potential before they see it themselves, and backing them to go further.

That approach is rooted in his own journey, growing up in the North East and still grounded in that same community today. He brings that lived experience into every room he walks into, from government to grassroots, giving his leadership both credibility and purpose.

He is generous with his knowledge, open with his network, and unwavering in his belief that this industry should work for more people - not just those who already know how to navigate it.

Alongside this, his appointment to the Creative Industries Council reflects the growing national recognition of his leadership - not just as a delivery partner, but as a voice shaping the future of the UK music industry.

This award speaks to the work that often goes unseen - the advocacy, the persistence, the conversations, and the constant drive to build something better. It is work that requires resilience, clarity and an unshakeable sense of purpose.

Mick embodies all of that.

On behalf of everyone at Generator - our fantastic team, our partners, and the communities we serve - I’m incredibly proud to see him recognised in this way.

Because while this award is called “Unsung”, Mick’s impact is being felt across the entire industry - and far beyond it.
